Course Transfers and AP Credits

How can I transfer course credits from another university or get credit for an AP course I took in high school?

The registrar provides detailed information on transfer and test credits.

You can also contact Advising & Academic Services, which can guide you through the transfer credit process. You can email them or meet with one of their advisors.

What courses can I take at ABC College that will transfer as Course 123 at UD?

A good place to start is by looking at the Transfer Credit Matrix, which lists courses that have successfully transferred to UD in the past. It is not a guarantee that the course will transfer again, but they often will. If you can't find a course in the matrix, it may still transfer, but it will need to be evaluated.

Once you have identified potential course equivalencies, follow the steps outlined in the instructions.

Internships, Labs, and Independent Study

How do I go about working in a lab on campus?

Faculty all over campus take students into their labs on a regular basis. We don't maintain lists of active labs, so you'll need to do a little research yourself (follow the plan below). You should try to make arrangements at least 1–2 months before the semester begins.

  1. Go to the websites for UD departments such as the Linguistics & Cognitive Science, Psychology, Physical Therapy, Communication Sciences & Disorders, Human Development and Family Studies, Disability Studies, and other related fields. Each website will have a list of faculty, many of whom have their own websites that describe their research. Read the research descriptions and create a list of labs that interest you.
  2. Once you have created a list of faculty, contact each professor to express your interest in obtaining research experience. When doing so, tell them about yourself (your major, your GPA, an unofficial transcript, and possibly a resume). Indicate the semester in which you would like to work, ask whether there is space in his or her lab. Ask what he or she requires of students who work in his/her lab for independent studies credit.
  3. Once you hear back and select a lab (if more than one said 'yes'), sign up for an independent study with the professor who runs the lab. To do this, you will often need to contact the office administrator of that department. The number of credits will vary depending on the number of hours worked.
  4. After you have been registered for independent study, complete the independent study form, which serves as an agreement between you and the faculty member.

How can I get credit for an internship?

For off-campus internships, you can sign up for the UNIV364 Experiential Internship course. Contact the University Studies department for more information.

Honors Student Issues

How can I become an honors student?

Honors Program applications are accessible via the Honors Program website.

I have a question about an honors requirement...

All questions about requirements for honors students should be directed to the Honors Program.

How can I enroll in a 600-level LING or CGSC course for honors credit?

Contact the office administrator, who will be able to help you enroll. After you have enrolled, contact the undergraduate advisor to request a course substitution (so it will count towards your CGSC or LING major).

I took a 600-level class for honors credit, but it does not show up on my degree audit. Why not?

In many cases, a 600-level class taken for a CGSC or LING major must be processed as a course substitution. Contact your undergraduate advisor to request a course substitution.

UDSIS and Degree Audit Issues

The advising forms show that a course should count for my major/minor, but it does not show up on UDSIS audits. What should I do?

We accept these courses as substitute courses. If you email the department's current undergraduate supervisor (cgsc-advise@udel.edu) and let them know the course number, a substitution request will be submitted for you. Substitutions should appear on your degree audits within about one day after being processed.

How do I change my graduation term or add/drop a major or minor?

To submit a request to change major or minors, complete the form in UDSIS. Select "Degrees & Advisement" or "Forms" from the UD Student Homepage. On the left menu, select the the "Undergraduate Students" folder to expand the drop-down menu. Then, select "Change Major, Minor, Concentration" or "Change Graduation Term."

Course Registration

I can't enroll myself in a course. Who should I contact?

Contact the academic program coordinator or academic support coordinator of the department offering the course. In some instances, you may need the professor's permission as well.

Our department can only help with enrollment in LING or CGSC courses.

Why am I not able to enroll in a course?

  • It may have prerequisites which you have not fulfilled.
  • The course may have restricted enrollment; for example, many courses are open to students of a specific major/minor. This information can usually be found in the description for the course section.
  • There may be an academic or financial hold on your student account, which will prevent enrollment.

Can I be exempted from a course prerequisite?

To request an exemption, contact the course instructor. If the instructor agrees to exempt you, the academic coordinator of the department offering the course can help you enroll.

Second Writing Course

Which courses can I take to fulfill the Second Writing course requirement?

The Linguistics and Cognitive Science department does not regularly offer Second Writing courses. Thus, you will usually need to find a course outside of our department to fulfill this requirement.

You can use UD Courses Search to determine for a given semester which courses are being offered to meet this requirement. Check off “Writing Course" under the Academic Requirements section when running the search.

Below are some courses we've identified in the past as being good choices for CGSC majors. ENGL410 is offered regularly, but sometimes it is restricted to students in specific majors/colleges. Others here may be offered infrequently.

  • ENGL368: Studies in Literature and Science
  • ENGL410: Technical Writing○ ENGL418: Writing in the Sciences

Some of the English department's topics courses might be good fits depending on the topic:

  • ENGL301: Advanced Writing
  • ENGL306: Topics in Writing○ ENGL413: Topics in Professional Writing

When can I take my Second Writing course?

Only after taking 60 credits.

Grade Issues

My instructor gave me a lower grade than I deserved. Can my advisor help me?

Your academic advisors cannot change your grades, nor do they serve as an intermediary in grading disputes. Instead:

  • Talk to the course instructor about the grade, and be prepared to explain your position. You may want to give yourself a day to cool off and prepare.
  • If you have spoken with the instructor and you still feel your grade is unfair, you can follow the steps for grade grievances found in the Student Guide to University Policies.
